Joe Girardi is gone. The Phillies sit at 22-29, good enough to be tied with the Marlins at 12 games back of the Mets.

And Joe Girardi is taking the heat for it.

Girardi has had struggles in the past managing a bullpen. We know this.

And this year has not been better. The Phillies bullpen has struggled. YET AGAIN.

But you watch the Phillies play baseball you can’t possibly tell me this is Joe Girardi’s fault.

Advanced analytics have devalued defense. But has anybody watched the Phillies play defense this year?

Its an abomination.

You run Kyle Schwarber in left and Castellanos in right, both known liabilities in the outfield, and expect to win games?

Well we’ll just outhit everybody.

When has any team outhit everybody and plays 0 defense en route to a pennant?

But even if it was possible it’s certainly not happening.

To outhit everybody your offseason bats need to produce. Schwarber is at a .192 clip with 66 strikeouts.

And is terrible in the field. He has maybe the worst arm in all of baseball.

You watch a guy miss the cutoff man with a lame duck throw home, just to advance the batter into scoring position. Then the very next play the other corner outfielder does the exact same thing.

Not only couldn’t they throw the runner out at the plate to save a run, but they missed the cutoff man allowing the batter to get to second.

It doesn’t take an analytical genius to realize that that loses games.

But maybe thats the problem. The front office sees offensive numbers and that’s it.

Offensive numbers are more important.

Kyle Schwarber is hitting .192 this season

But you just cannot run out the worst defense in the big leagues and expect to contend. You just cant.

At least Bohm is hitting, but hes no gold glover at third. We know Rhys is what he is at first. And then you run woman beater Odubel out there yet again, after finally being free of that contract, and he still can’t run a route.

So yeah, its a shame.

An MVP in Harper. The best catcher in the game with JT. And one of the best starting staffs in baseball. With Wheeler, Nola, and Gibson. Eflin and Ranger are good enough to win.

But they just can’t seem to figure it out.
